In 1981 he was offered a post as head of the Guitar department at the Jamaica School of Music in Kingston, Jamaica, where he worked for the next three years.
He is an associate of the London College of Music and besides teaching guitar, has worked as a session player in Germany and the United Kingdom during the late 1970s. His formative years were influenced by a wide variety of musical styles, including classical guitar, which he studied under Glyn Edwards and John Edwards. Ray Hitchins was born in the United Kingdom and started playing the guitar at the age of 12.
